Lake Mountain Day Loop Walk

The Lake Mountain Day Loop Walk is a 14.2 kilometre track through the alpine snowfields of Lake Mountain in Marysville, Victoria.

Starting at the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort car park, you head north taking the Echo Flat trail first.

This section of the entire trail starts off slightly rocky before it becomes fairly grassy and uneven in places.

Keep in mind that this entire area is a ski trail in the winter and thus the track is quite wide which makes it easier to hike for a larger group.

Each trail has its colour on the map – black (most difficult), blue (somewhat difficult), and green (easy).

The Echo Flat trail was coloured green and allowed the group to ease into the hike before we started walking the Jubilee Trail (a black trail).

However, in saying that, the Jubilee Trail wasn’t so bad after all. It has a few hills but nothing insurmountable by any stretch.

The Wollybutt trail continues and meets up with another section of the Echo Flat Trail, which will take you to another junction at Royston Trail.

You then head further north to hike the Panorama Trail where you can take in stunning views at the lookout point there.

Once you’ve finished there, head south on the Royston Trail and you’ll find yourself back at the car park in approximately 40 minutes.

Overall, this hike was relatively easy and one I would recommend to people who have been hiking for a while but wish to test themselves at a longer distance.

The area itself is eerily picturesque with most of it still affected by the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires.

One aspect of the Lake Mountain Day Loop Walk that I particularly liked was how frequently the track was signed.

Whether it was a pole with an orange arrow or a sign telling you which trail was going in what direction, you never felt like you were lost or unsure of where to go.

As always, if you wish to follow the same path we hiked, download it here from WikiLoc.
